Designed to take entry level HVAC graduates and prepare them to run solo maintenance calls, Howard Air’s Beyond 101 training initiative equips you with the necessary resource knowledge to diagnose minor system failures. Technicians will gain practical hands-on shop and ride-along experience with seasoned service technicians, and will prepare entry level service techs to successfully maintain, diagnose and repair HVAC systems in the field. You’ll also gain valuable customer skills to use while training in the field. Beyond 101 is taught in 9 phases:
– Identifying manufacturer equipment types & sizes
– Interpeting serial numbers & system age
– Documenting equipment information & conditions
– Locating equipment diagrams & troubleshooting resources
– Understanding safe working practices with electricity
– Identifying electrical components
– Gaining an understanding of electrical component purposes & operations
– Beginner high- and low-voltage electrical circuit diagnostics
– Understanding air movement & comfort, system operation & efficiency
– Using manometers to measure air flow
– Properly diagnosing & adjusting CFM using manufacturer air flow charts
(Not an air balancing course)
– Identifying & diagnosing motors and their purposes
– Learning proper air movement, blower wheel dynamics & proper replacement techniques
– Understanding belt driven blowers, motor selection, belt length / alignment / tension, sizing of motor pulleys & how to change RPM / CFM
– Understanding the refrigerant circuit, it’s components and how they are affected by different conditions & circumstances.
– Troubleshooting the four basic components of a refrigerant circuit, reversing valves, superheat, and sub-cooling.
– Understanding condensate drain design
– Repairing condensate drains & constructing complete condensate drain lines
– Understanding proper maintenance techniques & the importance of water damage prevention
– Identifying poor condensate removal effects on indoor air quality & comfort
– Identifying gas furnace components, controls, functions, heating sequences & troubleshooting
– Proper adjustment of gas pressures, integrated circuit boards & electronic ignition systems
– Understanding maintenance techniques, inspection & venting safety
– Identifying potential hazards of flue gas exposure & the dangers of carbon monoxide
– Ties Phases 1-8 into an established, systematic diagnostic process
– Establishing strong habits & applying strategy-based techniques to diagnose problems & quickly identify defective parts
– Outlines a systematic diagnostic process that will enable technicians to successfully locate and correct HVAC system problems
